Substance Use Disorders teach families that they are inadequate. And although SUDS is frustrating, baffling, confusing and challenging on many levels, I am convinced that one of the biggest roadblocks to treatment is our stubborn resistance to believing that change is possible. Maybe not change as defined by us: quick fixes, a cure, immediate results, etc. But change can happen and it will increase the odds of getting effective treatment.
Today, listen to the things you say to yourself and others about any big problems you are struggling with. Any signs that you feel helpless? Hopeless? Do you keep doing the same things expecting different results?
You are not inadequate. You may be under leveraged, under educated, demotivated and just plain old mad. But there is no reason to stay stuck in inadequacy.
