We have been made holy by God’s will through the offering of Jesus Christ’s body once for all. Hebrew 10:10 CEB
Although early Christians didn’t hang crosses around their necks as ornamental jewelry, the cross was a big deal. The first responders knew that the cross stood FOR something. Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “ I passed on to you as most important what I also received: Christ died for our sins in line with the scriptures, 4he was buried, and he rose on the third day in line with the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 CEB
Rowan Williams says that Paul was clear. He is saying that this first generation told him that Jesus died for their sins – and it means something. These early Christians understood sacrifice and they understood that Jesus sacrificed…for them.
“So the New Testament is telling us that the death of Jesus is a rescue operation that averts catastrophe, but one that works not just on behalf of individuals, but on behalf of the whole community that God wants to gather. It tells us that it has something to do with bringing into the world the concrete and powerful truth that God is committed to those he calls.” (p.28, The Sign and The Sacrifice)
This matters. Tomorrow we get personal.
