LIFE LESSON #4: Treat yourself. It is difficult to fulfill the duties of a Princess (or Prince) Warrior without accessories and a good haircut.
My mother was of the generation that did not actually touch their own hair. Instead, they went to the salon every week and had their hair “done”. Mom got her hair “DONE” every Friday – up to the last two Fridays of her life. Her stylist Diane had her salon in the basement of her home about two blocks away from where mom lived.
Once Alzheimer’s began it ravaging attack, my mother continued to insist on driving her Nissan Maxima down to her hair appointment. This is NOT recommended for anyone, especially a woman in the last stages of dementia.
But I’ve got to tell you – it is a bit of a testimony to the power of repetition that with advanced Alzheimer’s she still was capable of driving herself to and from the hair salon without any KNOWN accidents.
