Day 26

And we can’t take back

What is done, what is past

So fellas, lay down your fears

‘Cause we can’t take back

What is done, what is past

So let us start from here…

Note:  These are lyrics from a song displayed in pieces over the course of a number of days.  If you’re confused, just scroll back and catch up!  The song is called Trusty and True by Damien Rice.  Look it up and give it a listen, it’s beautiful!

The first verse of the song sort of hinted at the idea that maybe we’re not the people we intended to be.  Or perhaps we just ended up in a place we didn’t expect.  And today we come to the chorus.  These words remind us that there isn’t a whole lot we can do to change the past.  It is what it is.  I think these words push us towards acceptance both of where we’ve been and where we are. And that’s always a good thing.  I truly believe that acceptance is one of the biggest keys to happiness and contentment.

And so let these words today be a reminder.  We have to let go of things we have no control over and cannot change, namely, the past.  It’s not holding us back or preventing us from doing anything.  When it comes to both our faith and recovery, we always have the opportunity for fresh starts.  Those are built in to our relationship with God and, in an ideal world, with others as well.  Let’s not forget to take advantage of the opportunity for fresh starts.
